Rome: Total War - Gold Edition App Reviews

One of the most amazing games ever made...

For starters Rome Total War - Gold Edition is one of the most amazing games ever made. You hear some people saying in the reviews that its "poorly made", it is certainly not! It has been very well ported by Feral Interactive, Feral has always been my favorite game-publisher simply because they make high quality game ports, with almost no bugs. The gameplay is fantastic, with a campaign map of Europe where cities are developed and forces moved on a turn by turn basis, and then real time field and siege battles, which are unique and amazingly addicting. A must have for any ancient Rome or Greek enthusiast!!!!

First start works. Than it is data waste.

The game starts for me only once. Ive played a bit and then have to exit via the menu. The second start shows a advertisement window for the Alexander-Addon. Beyond this point the game crashes in 100% of all cases. I found out, that removing the whole settings folder for Rome, the game could be started again. This is bad quality. It might have to do with the fact, that i played it once via attached second screen and then tried to start without that screen. Have not verified this. But this should have been tested by the developers, because it is a normal use case on a laptop. The game itself is a classic - and it is still good. If it starts. If not, its data waste.

Its about bloody time.

This game originally came out for the PC back in 2004, so its a bit bemusing to see it only just now coming out for the Mac. Fortunately, it has aged spectacularly well, and was always one of the funnest of the Total War franchise. The port is quite faithful, and appears to be well-adapted to the Mac. It runs beautifully on my Core 2 Duo driven 13" MacBook Pro, even in intense battle scenes involving thousands of troops. No stability issues to date.

Im not a gamer...

... but I love Roman history and ancient military history. This seems to be a new genre of game, the "epic economic/political/military strategy game". Very cool. It is actually the only game on my Mac.

Long Overdue, but well worth the wait.

I planned to write this review earlier, but I kept having to play. Just. One. More. Turn. And then it was 4am, and I had to be at work in 3 hours. ;-) If youre not familiar with the "Total War" series on the PC, then you are really missing out. I actually picked up a half decent Toshiba gaming laptop just to be able to play this game and a few others when my household went nearly totally all Mac a couple of years back. Depsite the original game being about 7 years old now, I find that $30 is a good price to pay for the original game and its expansions to play them natively on the Mac. Although I love the Civilization series, Ive often played it and wished that I had more control over the battles and that I could freeze the game in a particular era of time a bit longer. Sure, there are mods and scenarios that allow you to do that to a certain extent but they arent as compelling as Total War games. You also get the bonus of losing out on all the micromanagement that goes along with playing Civ. The best reason to buy this game and support the developer is that Shogun: Total War II will be out for the PC soon. Support these guys and make it worth their while to port a more modern Total War game to the Mac.

Fantastic

For anyone who enjoys the Civiliaztion turn based strategy games, this is a wise investment. The one thing that this game brought to the table that none of the other highly acclaimed games have is real time battles. At first, I must admit that I was skeptical. However, after buying and playing the game, I quickly came to realize that this game not only includes the real time battles, it also perfectly conducts them. A skilled strategist can lead almost any force to victory: by setting ambushes, flanking the enemy when they are comitted to battle, even letting loose the warhounds. All around fantastic game.

Great game but bad support

I get the occasional crash while playing, and Ferals mac support page is awful. Its versions are out of date (it says the latest is 1.1.2, not 1.2.1), and its FAQ is all about gameplay confusion, not technical issues.

wait a minute this is gold right?

ive had this game for pc forever and i was more than pleased to see it came out for mac. things i liked - the game is awesome - hasnt changed from original - makes time fly things to look out for - when it first downloads it crashes alot - battles with alot of people can be extremely slow - even after awhile the game sometimes refuses to open saved games!!!! (most irritating considering ive spent alot of time on the campaign) heres my main issue. the game is "Rome total war GOLD EDITION" and yet i find no way to open barbarian invasion?! even after checking the support page i found no help and while the game was good it was a bit of a rip off not too pleased still gets 4 stars cuz i love the game

my favorite, but needs work

I have been a fan of the total war serries from the begining. I dont know how many hours I have logged in on each of them, from Shogun to Medieval, to Rome, to Medieval 2 two empire to Napoleon, I have played them all save for Shogun 2, For me, the best of the best is ROME, Total war. It just gets everything right. this game is great BUT The port needs work. Frame rate is pour, even on monster machines like my Mac Pro. The game stutters every once in a while and often in battles, you have to pause the game to give orders. On my Mac Book pro, (much weaker machine) I have a boot camped windows version of Rome running, much smoother and without any issue. To me, it feels like RTW after the first patch. This game needs to be better optimised for the mac. For other RTW players, the graphics are very similar, there is a little too much color in the dress, especially the reds are very over pronounced. and many of the battle maps are over bright and a little lacking compared to the windows version. this is nitpicking, I know, but I felt it should be noted. (are you reading feral) The game apears to have certain differances from the windows version, there apear to be some new models used in the citys as well as different battle AI. This could be just bad memory on my side tho. All in all, a great game but needs to optimised better for the mac to get the 5th star.

Tutorials Needed

This game is quite difficult to play if you are a first time gamer. I would like to see an interactive tutorial that helps a player learn to use the multitude of keyboard combinations. The instructions given now are not for first-timers sufficient to learn even the basics. Please help! This game would be a whole lot better if you introduced a control panel that would allow a player to click on various chosen move and then enter them to play. You rely almost exclusively on entering Keyboard combinations which are not easy to remember. When will this game be modified and available on iPad?

Just Phenomenal

A few months back, my uncle bought a new PC and bought a game I really enjoyed on it - Napoleon: Total War. I just thought it was so amazing how each and every person in a simulated battle could do such distinctive things - for example, someone scratches their head, or someone coughs - it must be so processor intensive. Not in this case. Because Rome Total War Gold Edition is only the third game in the Total War series, and the only one available to Mac, it has a lot of the features the new ones have (minus some graphics), however, this advanced of an RTS for a game as old as this, is just phenomenal. A bonus with downloading from the Mac App Store, too, is that Rome Total War Gold Edition: Barbarian Invasion (expansion pack) is also downloaded - sort of a bonus. However, the thing I find most incredible, like I already mentioned, is how little this slows down my Mac mini (2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 2GB memory, 500GB hard drive, Intel HD Graphics 3000 and OS X Lion) - it has never froze and never lagged. Even the online play using GameRanger is incredibly fast! This is a "must-download" and is well worth it!

Great Game!

This game is great! not a single crash.Very happy with this game! Too bad that the other total war games arent out for mac.

Other Factions...

Awesome game, only one problem with it though. How do I play other factions than the 10 available? I would love to play the Lombardii and I thought that it would be possible to unlock the remaining factions by beating the game. I did this with Western Roman Empire however still no other factions. Is it possible to get them or not?
